Good DV Cameras!
Hi. I'm looking to buy a Digital Video camera of my own now and I'm looking for some recomendations. Ive searched the net but the infomation seems to be aimed at the general public rather than filmmakers.

My requirements are basically:
Manual everything (focus etc)
Widescreen/open to use of anamorphic lenses
Reasonable price,i.e. I'd prefer not go +1k

Iwould totaly and wholeheartedly recommend the camera i just got for bbirthday. SONY TRV730.

It has manual focus, exposure. You can put on lenses. It's a great camera and the quality is amazing. You should check it out. I got it for around $600. Try going to www.mysimon.com and doing a search on DV cameras; this website will find you the cheapest place on the web to buy the camera from. Good luck.

If you are looking for the best quality, try looking for 2nd hand Canon XM1 or VX1000, both of these are 3 chippers and will produce far superior results than a single chipper. Check around Loot.com and similar to find a few bargains which can sometimes be found around ?900.

Expect to pay a lot more for optical attachments though as anamorphics come in at about ?600 and wide angles at about ?150 - ?200. Matte boxes that take 4x4 filters will also come in around the ?350 mark, but are well worth it for the quality and flexibility with filters.

While we are on the subject of the best DV camera's, how old is the Sony VX1000 and how sharp is the picture?

I've been looking for some time now to find any sample images of what the VX1000 gives but can only seem to find write-up's.

I like the idea of a second hand three chip as I'm not very keen on the small cameras - I prefer them to be a bit bulky, with easy access to the controls. I didnt know that the lenses cost that much but again I'm sure there are some second hand deals.

Hi,

Yes, there will be a few good lense deals around, but they tend to hold thier value quite well when sold individually, you may be better off spending a bit more for a 2nd hand 3 chipper that comes bundled with a Wide Angle, but you'd be very lucky to find a 2nd hand anamorphic.
